Staying downtown can be loud and bustling, especially if you're putting kids to bed early. While Union Square is the tempting, quintessential tourist spot, you might be more comfortable someplace more in line with your budget and sleep schedule.
If you plan to focus more on the classic San Francisco tourist experience, including Fisherman's Wharf and Ghiradelli Square, it might be wise to stay around Pier 39 and Coit Tower. You'll get a nice view, the sound of the seals during summer, and quieter evenings for uninterrupted sleep. All the big name chains are available, such as Marriot and Sheraton, as well as a few more affordable, charming independents.
If you don't mind being a bit out of the loop, there are many affordable motels along Lombard Streets in lower Pacific Heights and in the Marina, but they lack any real cultural draw or conveniences. Consider the Lombard Plaza Hotel, The Star Motel, or the Buena Vista Motor Inn And if you don't mind driving in to SF's city center and looking for parking each day, there are also affordable motor lodges available down in Cow Hollow, including the Ramada Limited and Pacific Motor Inn.
